A little round pan or call it a large ladle....its upto you. I really don't know if this is called by any particular name but I do know that it comes very handy while tempering dals, chutneys and curries which are seasoned after cooking. I also use it to season my curd rice.
I used to have an old hand me down which was not very stable on a gas stove because of its small base, but the newer design incorporates a vertical stub of metal attached to the handle which serves as stand and provides more support. It also has a copper coated bottom....yipeee!! I guess that makes for better heat distribution.
